How to name a weapon so it matters to your story
Start with what the weapon costs
A strong weapon with no cost is just a shortcut. The generator gives every weapon a drawback because the drawback is what produces scenes: the owner who has to choose between using it and staying hidden, the blade that weakens its wielder, the treasure that wants something back.
Decide the cost before you decide the name. A name that hints at the cost, like Sunken Frost for a blade made of river bone, reads as earned.
Match the naming conventions of your genre
Xianxia and wuxia weapons usually have short names built from an image: a season, a weather event, a line of poetry, a place. A type word such as jian (sword) or dao (saber) often closes the name. Readers of translated web novels expect to see the characters or pinyin, so the generator gives both and a plain English gloss.
LitRPG weapons read like loot: a name, a rarity, one specific passive. Fantasy and dark fantasy lean on a history. Science fiction names should sound like something a crew would say in a hurry.
- Keep xianxia names to two or three characters before the type word.
- Check any Chinese you publish with a native reader.
- For LitRPG, keep the effect measurable.
Use rank to control the power curve
A rank system tells readers how impressed to be. Mortal, earth and heaven grades suit cultivation stories. Common to mythic suits LitRPG. Ordinary, rare and legendary suits almost everything else.
Do not hand your protagonist the top grade in chapter five. A lower-grade weapon that the hero outgrows, or one that is secretly better than its grade, gives you room to grow.
Track every weapon in your story record
Readers notice when a sword changes length or a treasure loses an ability halfway through a serial. Save the name, rank, effects, cost and owner when you pick a result, and note the chapter where each fact first appears.
In Webnovels AI, Bao keeps records beside your chapters and asks before changing them, so a weapon in chapter 80 matches the one you introduced in chapter 12.
