How to outline a novel or web serial arc
Start with the arc goal
An outline works when you know where the arc must end. Write that in one sentence first: what the protagonist has or has lost, and who is watching. Then work backward to the chapters that make that ending cost something.
The generator opens each outline with an arc goal and closes with an ending line so you can check every chapter against both.
One event per chapter
A beat that says "Wen Yu feels conflicted" is not a beat. A beat that says "Wen Yu steals the herb and is nearly caught" is. Each line in the outline should state something that happens and something that changes. Web-serial chapters also benefit from ending on a question or a turn.
Pick a pattern
Pattern options give the arc a spine. Advancement and cultivation arcs need breakthroughs that cost something. Tournament arcs need opponents who differ in method. Dungeon and tower arcs need floors with their own rules. Revenge, hidden identity, romance and mystery arcs each need their own pressure. Choose one and the tool builds around it; choose any if your story mixes them.
- Put planned reveals in the notes so the outline plants them early.
- Say how power should grow, so a breakthrough is not a surprise.
- Compare the two outlines and take the best chapters from each.
Treat the outline as a draft
Your outline will change once the characters start talking. Save the version you start from, and update it when a chapter changes the plan. In Webnovels AI, Bao keeps your outline and records beside your chapters and asks before it changes them.
